This chapter explains how the book was researched, how figures are graded and checked, what could not be found, and how the book will be kept current while AI advertising products change month by month. It is written so that a reader can judge the evidence before relying on any figure.

How the research was done

This book is a secondary research synthesis. It builds on an ONS research draft dated 27 and 28 October 2026, whose checked source records, platform availability and eligibility notes, ONS test observations and calculations were carried over as one notes file of 76 records. It adds three research passes completed on 28 October 2026: OpenAI and ChatGPT Ads (121 records); Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and other AI platforms (103 records); and the UAE market, AI adoption and advertising rules (95 records). Because the research tools returned older cached copies of OpenAI's policy pages, ONS opened OpenAI's ad policies, Ads Manager availability page and policy eligibility table directly in a web browser on 28 October 2026 and recorded them as 17 further records. Each record holds the value or wording, what it measures, its geography and period, the publisher, the page title, the link, the publication date and an evidence grade.

The chapters were written from those records only. Nothing was estimated, rounded into a different value or filled from memory. Where sources disagree, both values appear with their dates. Interpretation sits in labelled "ONS reading" boxes and views about the future in "ONS outlook" boxes, so a reader can separate what the sources say from what ONS concludes or expects. ONS's two early UAE client tests carry the ONS chip and are never extrapolated into benchmarks. The planning models in chapter 12 are ONS illustrations with hypothetical inputs, not market data.

Scope

The book covers advertising inside AI assistants for UAE businesses, with ChatGPT Ads as the main focus, plus Google ads in and around AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Meta AI, Gemini and organic visibility in AI answers. Global and US figures are labelled as such every time. Platform statements carry the date they were published or read, because availability, formats and policies changed several times during 2026. The book gives no legal advice: businesses should confirm category eligibility, UAE approvals and licences for each campaign. For restricted categories it states what each platform allows or prohibits and gives no workaround.

Evidence grades

GradeMeaningTypical sources
[Official]Published by a government body, authority or regulator, directly or through a named press report of its releaseUAE Media Council, UAE Government, ministries, WAM, DIFC
[Industry]Research firm, academic study, trade press citing named data, or a law-firm summary of a rulePew Research Center, Seer Interactive, Ahrefs, Similarweb, StatCounter, Digiday, PPC Land, law firms
[Platform]What a platform publishes about itself, including policies, help articles, announcements and its own statisticsOpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Perplexity
[Estimate]Agency blog, unsourced compilation or vendor claim without a stated methodAgency commentary and secondary compilations
[ONS]ONS Digital Marketing's own test observations, calculations and planning assumptionsThe two anonymised UAE client tests, the chapter 12 models, the implementation plan

The grade records provenance, not verified accuracy. A platform's own statistic is self-reported, and an industry panel measures what its sample sees.

Verification scope

Every figure in this book was recorded from a page that was opened during the research, and a script checked that every figure in the text is tied to a recorded source. A separate check then reopened the sources of 208 facts: OpenAI's numeric and dated facts first, then Google and other platform facts, UAE facts, and independent performance figures. Of these, 149 matched as recorded, 49 matched with a caveat that the text now states, 5 had been superseded by newer figures and now use the newer figure, 4 were wrong and were corrected, and 1 page could not be reopened and is reported with its original attribution. The 17 records read directly from OpenAI's live pages were not rechecked, because they were read on the day of publication. The ONS draft's own records had been checked against their publishers by the draft's authors on 27 and 28 October 2026.

ONS reading

The largest gap is the one UAE businesses care most about: what ChatGPT Ads cost and deliver in the UAE by sector. Every published benchmark is from another market. ONS intends to address this with permissioned, aggregated campaign data from eligible clients, subject to client consent, privacy review and disclosure checks. No release date is promised.

Keeping the book current

OpenAI's ad policy went through six revisions between March and September 2026, and its country list grew from one market to 89 in under nine months. ONS will check availability, policy, eligibility and creative specifications before each update and record the changed statement, the prior wording, the source, the date and the effect on the guidance. When two authoritative pages differ, the book will show both and take the conservative position until the platform clarifies.
